DOWNTOWN RENOVATION (())

There are big plans - for Main Street in downtown Salt Lake City. The hope is to bring life back to the heart of the city... Especially now that the Olympic stores have closed shop. News Specialist Sandra Yi is live downtown and has that story.

Remember during the Olympics - this temporary storefront housed guide centers. Eventually - it will be torn down - and an office building will go up.

There are other plans for this area - in hopes of revitalizing downtown. Derek Dyer has his sights set on - what used to be the 'Canada House' during the Olympics. Dyer wants to open an art gallery here or in one of the other empty storefronts on Main Street. He hopes property owners will donate the space on weekends - until a permanent tenant moves in.

Derek Dyer/Artist: "ART, IT CAN BRING A LOT OF PEOPLE TOGETHER. A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED IN IT. YOU JUST HAVE TO LET PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT IT."
Dyer says his gallery would draw more people to the area. Meanwhile - the Downtown Alliance says redevelopment plans - which would allow short-term tenants to occupy empty space - are in the works. It says filled storefronts would make the area more attractive to other prospective tenants.

David Baird/Downtown Alliance: "WHAT WE'D LIKE TO DO IS OBVIOUSLY TO INCREASE THE VITALITY OF DOWNTOWN WITH MAYBE A LITTLE BIT MORE COLOR, MORE VIBRANCY ESPECIALLY AFTER HOURS."
Revitalizing downtown is one of the city's priorities. Mayor Rocky Anderson launched his weekend parties after the Winter Olympics - to keep the spirit alive. The city council also recently took its first step - to bring life back to downtown and Main Street. Derek Dyer says - his idea would draw more people to the area. He says - downtown can be just as vibrant as it once was - in the past.

Derek Dyer/Artist: "I'VE LIVED HERE MOST OF MY WHOLE LIFE AND I'D LIKE TO SEE IT TURN INTO MORE OF A PLACE MY GRANDPARENTS USED TO SAY IT USED TO BE. TONS OF PEOPLE, YOU GO DOWNTOWN."
Salt Lake Community College will open its metro campus between 1st and 2nd South and Main Street next month. The Downtown Alliance says that will cater to a lot of businesses downtown.
